    Another defeat on Sunday 2-3 again, this time in the cup. It was against a team a couple of divisions above us though, so i suppose we can take heart from that. Felt my performance was good again, several 1v1 saves, took every high ball - with and against the wind, and a couple of tips over - one from a cheeky lob that I thought had beat me. Kicking felt stronger again, and was easily going 3/4 of the pitch even against the wind. We had a long training session last night, and concentrated on passage-of-play stuff, and attacking much quicker as we tend to over-play a bit much in midfield. After the session we callled a team meeting, We are all feeling pretty down at the moment as we have now lost 5 on the bounce, a shocking run in anybodies terms. But we were all very positive, nobody is really doing anyhting wrong, no major mistakes, and we know we are a team of good players. We focused on carrying on what we are doing by playing football, keeping possesion and then working hard when we lose possesion but also to get the ball forward that bit quicker and use the rapid pace we have on the wings. On sunday we play the biggest game we have faced as a team. After 5 on the bounce, this really is must-win! Add to that, the fact that its in the Cheshire Cup - our version of the Champs League! We are playing a team from Sale, in Manchester on the same day that Liverpool travel to Old Trafford to face Utd. Should be fun!!! We have filled a 53 seater coach and there are some cars going aswell, so hopefully it will be a brillaint away day!!!   2. Im 28, been playing in goals since I was 11. Feels like a long time!!! I hear ya about the knees and ankles thing, my right ankle is very weak and I have to wear ankle supports, or my ankle gives way when I kick. It feels as if the ligament is permanently strained... Reckon im gonna need ankle replacements when im 50 or so, maybe even before. I think you have done well playing until now, some of the teams we play against have got shit-hot strikers that are 17/18, and I may be bigger, stronger and louder they are just soooo quick! We've got a forward, Pato, (not the one that plays for Milan tho :D ) and he's a couple of years older than you, and I reckon this will be his last season. He's constantly carrying injuries, and muscles seem to pull as soon as he chases something down. I think a big thing for him though is family. He's got 2 kids and his Mrs works sundays so it can be a nightmare for him. Me and the Mrs have got an 8 month old ourselves, and I suppose im gonna have to get my priorities in check sooner rather than later. I packed in 7-a-side on a friday for a while, but started again for pre-season. Her indoors wasnt hapopy bout that! Oh well. Since my groin had its torture (aka acupunture) I feel fitter and stronger than I have done in a while, and touch wood, it wont be flaring up anytime soon. Think ive got a few years left in me yet, but once Josh gets to football-team age im sure ill be hangin up my gloves to enjoy time watching him bang them in for Liverpool

Sounds a bit like our game yesterday, we are going through a really bad patch at the moment were we're playing really good football, but not taking chances or killing teams off. I feel as if i'm playing well myself at the moment, and its a gutting feeling when you make a save only for defenders not to react - it happened to me yesterday, and has done a few times this year. Just wondering how old you are if you're thinking of packin in???

    Cheers for the replies guys... Im a size 10 so they arent too small, and Id love to spend 50-60 quid on each pair, but with a 7 month old baby and a mortgage I just cant justify it. I try and buy my glovews in a sale for about 30 quid or so, so I dont think that too cheap tbh. Grounds usually are quite hard, i'll try to remember about gettting up on my knuckles... Cheers Marat.     Under Armour is THE mutts nuts. They do warm and cold weather stuff, and you can get it pretty damn cheap on the M&M Sports website. Keeps you warm in winter, and cool in summer.

    Hi Chris, Wish i had heard of GKHero earlier as I have just last week bought a new pair of Adidasslers, again over-priced even though they were "discounted". Was an emergency buy though as I had to have them for next day. Will definately be using GKHero in the future though. Just one thing I am wondering, last few pairs of gloves ive had the inner lining across the palm and fingers had basically deteriorated really quickly, causing the palms to tear open - A pair of Sells I had lasted about 6 games, not impressed and never again! Annoys me a bit as I do look after the gloves, they are washed and hung to dry after each game. Am I doing anything wrong, or is that just the nature of softer palmed gloves??? I was just wondering if there is anything like a "liner" glove??? Cheers, and good work with the site! Fitzy

    Sorry GT, meant to talk a bit about the accupunture. I uyse a fella called Ian Griffiths (Biffo), an ex-pro who played for Tranmer and Wigan amongst others, before gbeing the first overseas player to play in China, before retirement. Whilst in China he became interested in traditional Chinese Acupuncture after receiving treatment for a calf injury. Like me, he was very sceptical about how a needle being poked into your body can cure all sorts of problems to do with muscles, nerves etc... Ive has 4 treatments with Biffo over the last year, at
  9. Penalty Kicks

    Luck really. Dont think you can really be an expert penalty saver a la Reina, unless you have excellent agility and do your research on the taker, which isnt really applicable to 99% of amateur keepers. I tend to move back and forth across my line, spread myself and be on my toes. Because I feel weaker diving to my right, I try to time my movements so I am on the right hand side of the goal when the kick is taken. This can sometimes out-fox the taker as there is a bigger gap to one side, and they change their mind mid run and take a weak kick. Saved a few penaltied like this, including 2 in the same game from differnet kickers. Ultimately, if the kick is hard and into the corners, especially low or high, there is very little any keeper in the world can do.
  10. Strength - Kicking, shot stopping, 1v1's, positioning Weakness - Punching (dont get enough distance), diving to my right, long straight balls into the box (nightmare!)
  11. What do you do during 1 on 1's?

    Stay on my feet as long as possible and spread my arms wide. Strikers, especially when running at pace (unless they are Thierry Henry like dribblers) will always give you a chance of collecting at their feet IF you are brave enough. I definitely find it easier when the attacker is running in from an angle though, if they are coming from a central position I find it much harder.

    I feel weaker diving to my right, I make saves and stuff but I definately feel more power and spring when diving to my left. It feels like I always land awkwardly when I dive to my right aswell. Strange because im right footed!???

    Lloris is excellent. Im a Liverpool fan, and he was superb against us in the CL groups last season. Although we were poor in both games, he saved them from heavy-ish defeats. One save in particular from a point-blank Fabio Aurelio header was outstanding. Hes not as good as Cassilas, Reina, Cech, Buffon or Stekelenberg though.
  14. Playing against Kings High School, Chester when I was about Year 9 or 10. Long ball was played through, my centre back got a flick header on the ball to make it easier for me to collect so the ball was simply rolling back to me, I took my eyes off it, went through my legs and the striker ran round me to tap into an empty net. Rediculous.

    [/i]Another couple of bad weeks for The Hoolies. A 5-2 defeat last week against a poor team followed a 3-2 defeat yesterdday. On the plus side I was given Man of The Match in both games, and feel much, much stronger and fitter after the accupuncture sessions. I even set up a goal yesterday from a free kick about 10 yards outside our box straight to our right winger who found the corner. Last weeks game was a weird one. We went two down quickly from bad, bad goals. The 1st was my fault as we where playing in wet and very windy conditions, I misjudged a through ball thinking it would hold up in the wind, but it skipped quickly off the ground and past me for the striker to score from a narrow angle. 2nd was another long ball - we have ongoing problems dealing with balls in behind the centre-backs due to a lack of pace. I was 1v1 went out to narrow the angle, as the forward went to square the ball to another forward the ball rolled into the groove of the 18 yard line, and he mis-kicked it. Rediculous, but just sums our season up so far. After this we absolutely battered them, hitting the bar and the post, and having several shots either blocked or cleared off the line. I just had that feeling it wasnt gonna be our day. Early in the 2nd half we hit back with two quick goals, the 2nd was a rocket from a quickly taken short corner. Brilliant goal. 2-2 and game-on. We then had a clear goal not-given after their keeper clawed it back out. I actually seen the net ripple from the other end, only for the ref to ignore our pleas. The 'scorer' was booked for his protest, and after that the ref gave us absolutely nothing. Its fair to say we also lost our heads a bit, and in pushing for a 3rd, left gaps at the back. However, their 3rd and 4th goals were so clearly offside it was untrue! I was left in 1v1 situations both times and managed to block, only for the ball to fall back to the attacjker for the 3rd goal, and to another attacker for the 4th. Yesterday we played a half-decent team called Bushells, who were promoted from our league season before last, and were relegated last season and are back in our league. I have a friend, Crossan, who plays for them, and he is exceptional. He plays at League of Wales standard, and has played semi-pro back home in Ireland. I gave a warning before the game, but our central midfielders just couldnt cope with his running. After playing some good stuff early on, we found ourselves 1 down after Mark broke from midfield, and after ging out to narrow the angle he shot, and it just flicked the covering defenders outstretched foot and looped up and over me. Gutted. Not long after I set-up our equaliser picking out Jack Withy from a free-kick about 10 yards outside the box. Their full-back just touched it with his head, which made it easier for Jack as he was able to shoot 1st time. 1-1. Into ther 2nd half and I made a string of 4 or 5 1v1 blocks, ans another from the edge of the box after they played a sharp 1-2. I felt good. It was gonna take something special to beat me again. It was special, think of that van Basten volley, but from the other side of the box. There was ahint of hand ball as he chested the ball mid-run from a throw in, but the finish was awesome, absolutely nothing that I could do. Sometimes you just gotta hold your hands up and say "fair play". 3rd goal again came from a throw, and was left 1v1 against Mark, after I had saved twice from his 1v1's earlier, he changed and instead of shooting, he feinted to shoot and went round me to roll the ball in. 3-1. We pulled a goal back with a couple of minutes to go, but it was too late. Mark, and a couple of their players came over and said we were the best footballing team they had played. We do play some really good stuff, along the floor, taking the 1 & 2 touch stuff that we do in training into games. But for some reason, this season, the final ball is not there. I think sometimes we are guilty of over-playing, a bit like Arsenal, and probably not getting what we deserve out of the game. It was nce to get our MOM again though, I kept us in the game for as long as we could, only to be beaten by that awesome volley. Cup matches for the next two weeks, not really looking forward to it, but surely our luck must improve sometime??? As far as training goes, we train once a week, on a wednesday. We do some running, about 2 miles then some sprints and stuff. Then whilst the players do ball work the manager takes me to one side and we do handling stuff, from both short and long distance, along the floor and crosses etc... We then put a goal up and do the "sweat box" where a strijker is played through five times and is only allowed 2 touches. He has to shoot before he gets past a certain point. I like this, its a pretty good excercise and I always have a go at the shooting aswell. DFoesnt sound like much, but it doesnt half take it out of you!!! I also cycle to work daily, which is about a 10 mile round trip so my legs and groin are pretty strong from that, and I play 7 aside football on a friday night which is pretty fast paced. Its also in a cage, so you have to be on your toes for any rebounds after shots. Gotta get back to work, see you later lads.
